UNIT I 1. HIS FIRST FLIGHT
The two brothers and sister of the seagull had learned to fly. But he couldn’t. The vast sea was the cause of fear. His parents advised and even threatened to let him starve. He is now hungry and walking on the ledge to and fro for one day. He is afraid to fly to his parent’s edge for food. When the mother flew towards him with a piece of fish and halted near to him in the air he dived at it and this helped him fly automatically. He fell downwards and got terrified but he could flap his wings soon and fly upwards. His mother swooped past him. His father screamed. His brothers soared and dived around him. He dropped his legs to stand on the green sea. His legs sank. He was tired and week and couldn’t rise. Then his belly touched the sea. He floated on it. His family praised him.
2. I WILL FLY
Dr. Kalam believes that the flamed mind of the youth is the most powerful resource on the earth. No youth needs to fear about the future. The mission of Sasthrayaan was to ensure the preparation of about two thousand students from different schools to make them eligible for engineers, scientists, doctors and civil servants. Kalam’s inaugural address was on the topic “Science Empowers the Nation”. After the address, many raised their hands to ask questions. He shares in this unit the relevance of a question asked by a teenager. The boy expressed his fear to talk to his teachers and friends. He admitted that he had not yet asked any question in his class. The boy really wanted to become a marine engineer. Dr. Kalam was completely surprised. He appreciated the boy for asking that sincere question and recited a beautiful poem named “I Will Fly”. He instilled courage and confidence in the boy by reciting that poem. He asked him to fly using his wings of goodness, trust, potentialities, greatness and confidence. He also encouraged all of them to be unique by fighting the hardest battle in life. Surely all these things will help us to reach the destined place in a unique way.
3. QUEST FOR A THEORY OF EVERYTHING
Stephan Hawking was born in England on 8 January 1942. At St.Alban’s school he did not seem to be an extraordinary. He never secured high grades. Gradually he showed an interest in science and joined the University to study Mathematics. He joined Oxford to study Natural science and there he specialized in physics. At the age of 21 he contracted a rare disease, ‘amyotrophic lateral sclerosis’ (ALS), a debilitating neurological disease. There was no cure for it. Doctors gave him a life expectancy of only two years. In his own words, whatever achievements he made later in his life was a bonus. Hawking is an extraordinary brilliant man. He made amazing achievements. He has won many awards, though he has not been awarded the nobel prize. He passed away in 2018.
4. IF
Here a father advises his son and it describes the traits of a perfect man. Maintain your coolness when people lost it. Trust yourself when others doubt you. Don’t be tired of waiting and don’t follow lies. Don’t hate others even they hate you. Don’t talk too wise. Dream and think but don’t make it your master or aim. View success and failure equally. Say truths even dishonest people may twist them to trap fools. Collect all your winnings and risk them on one turn of the dice. Don’t tell others your loss but start again. Continue to hold on even you have nothing left but your dreams. Talk with crowds and maintain virtue. Walk with kings keep common touch. None should be able to hurt you. All should be assured of your help, but none expect too much from you. You should forgive the offenders. If you do the above things the earth and everything in it is yours and you will be a man.
