18. IS SOCIETY DEAD

The essay ‘Is Society Dead’ gives us a critical perspective on the use of technology that isolates human from social life. Man is a social animal and his five senses are instruments to connect to society. Ears are for listening to the myriads of sounds coming from the world.  The author tells us how the i- pod has blocked our ears to the sounds of the world and voice of other human beings. It has even changed the shared music to an isolated and secret one.  Once earphone is fixed in the ear, we lose contact with the wonderful world of sounds around us. The author exhorts us to open up our senses to the surprising experience of the human world and thus become part of it.

19. THE CYBERSPACE

Modern psyche makes rules instead of following them. Cyberspace gives us this freedom of making our own rules. Today cyberspace is reached and used by everyone. This evokes discussion regarding its misuse. Cyberspace is a collection of spaces: suitable to children, to the grown-ups and some suit to everyone.  It is a vast real estate. These are public spaces and private spaces. E-mail is private and a video sharing site is public. It needs self-ruler controlled by the choice of visitors and users. This multi functionality makes cyberspace very attractive. Private spaces like e-mail needs no control.  The information and entertainment websites are to be partially regulated. Social net-work sites must moderate discussions. Cyberspace of the future is to be ruled by self-reliant communities to support  like-minded people. This will form a global village.
