MATCHBOX

Ashapurna Debi always compare women to matchboxes. Though matchboxes have the power to destroy everything, they remain calm like women.
There was a three storied house. When Nomita took Ajith’s dress to give the washer man she got a letter to her from his pocket, which come three days before. Ajith had opened and not mentioned about that to her.
It is a usual habit of him, though Nomitha protested. First he used laugh it away. The letter was written by Nomitha’s mother. It contained the usual complaints about her life. Mother was a widow. Still she could send her daughter to a wealthy family on the strength of look alone.
Actually mother wanted money from Ajith. Ajith knows it. Nomitha felt shame and it was really an insult to her. She used to tell her mother not to ask for money. At first mother wrote even on post card.
When she met Ajith she was angry. Ajith said that he was looking whether it was a love letter. They quarreled. He called her mother a beggar. In a rage she burned her sari. He suddenly put of the fire. He was terrified.
Nomitha took the dress to washer man. However she didn’t reveal anything to her neighbors.

Mending Wall

The poet tells us that something doesn’t love a wall. The poet and his neighbor repair jointly the wall every spring. The wall separates their properties.
What is the need of a wall? Truly he poet grows apples and his neighbor pine trees. The neighbor’s opinion is that “good fences make good neighbours”. The poet imagines the neighbor as a person who is addicted to age old systems. But he simply repeats the proverb.
The wall not only separates their properties, but also it acts as a barrier to friendship and communication. It lead to alienation, emotional isolation and loneliness. The natural world does not like the existence of such a wall.
The poem is a sad reflection on today’s society, where man made barriers exist between people, groups, nations base on discrimination of race, caste, creed, gender and religion.

Horegallu

In every tiresome journey, we need a place to rest and regain our energy.  Everyone is carrying heavy burdens of problems and worries.  They need a place to unburden themselves.
Sudha Murty in “Horegallu” talks about a stone bench under the village banyan tree.  People used to sit there and refresh themselves during their long walks.  Like the physical horegallus people need emotional horegallus as well.  The author’s grandfather was such a one.
The grandfather used to sit on the stone bench and listen to the worries of the villagers.  In the modern times the author found Ratna, a clerk in her office doing the same service.  She used to listen to the problems shared by her colleagues.
People sometimes need to share their worries and problems with someone else.  In the present times everyone is busy and no one has time to listen to others. Talking itself can release a lot of pressure.   It is not necessary to suggest solutions.
A good listener should be patient and sympathetic.  Also he should not be critical.  It is not necessary to be immensely intelligent or professionally trained. Most of all, a good listener should be trustworthy.  Our present times require more and more horegallus.

Any woman

Any woman, by Iris poet Katherine Tynanan  is a celebration of the all comprehensive and selfless love of mothers,. A mother expresses her sentiments on her role in holding the family together. She is the keystone of the arch which hold the roof and walls of the house. The house represents the family.

She is the fire which gives warmth to the family and the sun that gives warmth and light to the earth. For the children the mother is the the ‘sacred ring’ that protects them and the knot of the love that binds them together. She decorate the walls, arranges food, curtains and the bed. The poem ends with a touching prayer to God to prolong her life until her children grow up. A women’s role is  indispensable even to the birth of Jesus Christ.

The poem bonds in metaphorse like pillars, sacred ring, the keystone of the arch and the knot of love.
