8. Sunrise on the Hills

The poet describes a visit to the hills. There he stood still and looked up at the sky, which lit up with the rising sun’s glow. The woods and the valleys were also lit up. A soft breeze was blowing.  From the summit of a mountain, he could see clouds floating below him. The sun was shining between the summit and the ground level, and around the forests. He imagines that the sun and the clouds were in battle and finally the sun has won. The defeated clouds are hiding.  The mountains around him seemed to raise up a lance with its pointed tip shattering the sky. Every cliff was bare, but a pine tree, split into half and bereft of leaves. Suddenly the clouds disappeared. The valley beneath shines in the sunlight.  A part of the river flowing along the valley it fell under the shade of hilly forest, and another part shone in the sunlight as a waterfall was created. The current of river was so strong and swift and he heard the waters hitting the rocks. There was a still lake also without noise.  The beach next to it seemed silver in colour. The sound of a bell echoed by the hills. He heard the sound of a horn and of people making merry. A thin line of smoke was seen rising from the hills. If you are ever beset with difficulties and sorrows, you should come to the hills that teach how to stop you from losing hope.

9. TRIP OF LE HORLA

The author and his friends set out the voyage on July 8. At five O’clock the balloon vehicle named Le Horla was lying in the courtyard. There was a square basket attached to carry the five passengers, Jovis, Mallet, Beer, Bessand and the author. The balloon was inflated with gas.  There was also a ballast to adjust the balance. When the guy-rope was cut the balloon took off. It flew high over Paris city. At ten O’clock they began to hear slight country voices and get the smell of the soil. The balloon was rising and they reached the height of 2000 feet.  Then the sky turned pale. The earth was buried in milky vapours. Gradully they rose to 3350 metres above. Then they went down rapidly. They saw the Shadow of their vehicle jumping over ditches and trees. A storm threatened. Suddenly the lights of a town appeared. The captain shouted, “Get ready for the descent” The lieutenant cut the anchor cord and it stopped. With the help of Belgian peasants the travellers reached the station at Heyst. They left for paris by train.

10. THE SACRED TURTLES OF KADAVU

Namuana is a beautiful village on the island of kadavu in Fiji. The women of Namuana gather on the beach and sing a legendary chant. Hearing this magical song a lot of giant turtles would rise to the surface and lay on the surface.  The song means: we are all mourning. Rise to the surface Raudalice and Tinaicoboga. Let us have a look at you. The legend:  Long ago there lived Tinaicoboga, wife of the chief of Namuana. Raudalice was her charming daughter. One while they were fishing some cruel fishermen came in a canoe and seized them. But the sea-gods turned furious and a violent storm capsized the canoe. The gods changed the helpless women into turtles. It is their descendants today who rise.
